Can You Use Vitamin C and Retinol Together?

Skincare ingredients can often feel overwhelming to navigate. From growth factors and peptides to kojic acid, stem cells, and niacinamide, the list of options is endless. While all these ingredients have great benefits, they can make curating your skincare routine confusing. One common question many people have is: Can you use vitamin C and retinol together? Here’s what you need to know.

What’s Retinol?

Retinol is a derivative of vitamin A and is widely used in skincare products to support collagen production and trigger cell turnover. Collagen is the protein responsible for your skin’s firmness and smoothness. Cell turnover is your skin’s natural renewal process.

Retinol helps your skin cells behave like younger, healthier cells, promoting collagen production and skin renewal. This process can help fade dark spots, correct hyperpigmentation, smoothen fine lines, and improve your skin’s texture and tone.

Retinol is also effective for acne treatment. It works at a cellular level to reduce oil production and inflammation, helping prevent breakouts while ensuring skin firmness and smoothness.

What Can I Use Retinol With?

Since retinol is a strong ingredient, it can cause your skin to peel, become sensitive, or flake if combined with other harsh ingredients like AHAs and BHAs. Therefore, retinol should not be used at the same time as leave-on skincare products such as mandelic acid, salicylic acid, glycolic acid, or lactic acid.

What’s Vitamin C?

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant used in skincare products to repair skin damage and prevent signs of aging when applied topically. It helps protect your skin from damage caused by free radicals, which result from environmental factors like infrared light, blue light, and pollution.

In terms of skin repair, vitamin C supports collagen production and regulates melanin production, which helps fade hyperpigmentation. Both processes contribute to an overall glow and vibrancy of your skin. Vitamin C is often found in serum form and can also boost the protective benefits of SPFs when used together.

Using Vitamin C and Retinol Together

While most skincare experts advise against using vitamin C and retinol together at the same time due to their differing pH requirements, that doesn’t mean you can’t incorporate both into your routine.

Using them together can render them less effective due to the pH imbalance. However, you can use both ingredients in your skincare routine by timing their application correctly. For instance:

  • Vitamin C can be applied in the morning to protect against daily environmental damage.
  • Retinol can be applied before bedtime to work overnight on cell turnover and skin renewal.

By using them at different times of the day, you can harness the powerful anti-aging benefits of both ingredients without compromising their effectiveness.
